We had a fantastic weekend with my family in Cleveland. I will post all about that later but for now I wanted to post an update on Merrick's neurologist appointment at the Cleveland Clinic yesterday.
The doctor was running behind so that meant an hour wait in the waiting room with a 1 year old. That was really hard but Jonathan and Merrick spent most of the time running around and laughing. I am not sure that the other patients liked them but we had to keep him entertained.
When the doctor finally took us back he listened while we told him the story of the last 21 months. Then he told us Merrick has breath holding spells with convulsive syncope. He think some of it my be "fixed" if we get his iron up (since it is way low). So the plan is to work really hard at getting his iron up and to walk on egg shells until he out grows this.
It was a very reassuring, good appointment. Jonathan and I both left feeling really good about it. We will go back to the Clinic in 3 months for a follow up and will have more blood work done to test how his body handles iron and moves oxygen.
The doctor was so great with Merrick through the whole appointment. When he was listening to Merrick's heart he let Merrick hold the end of the stethoscope and the doctor told Merrick where to put it. It was very cute, Merrick was so happy to be doing something. So after we left the Clinic we stopped at Toys R Us and got Merrick a doctor kit :)
All in all a very good visit. The doctor says there are things he will watch for as Merrick grows but he seems pretty sure Merrick will out grow this and there won't be any long term problems.
